Finlay Mickel retained his British men's
downhill title yesterday in Meribel, France, on the first day
of racing at the British Land National Ski Championships.
With eight World Cup top 30s this season,
Mickel, 27, might have expected to be further ahead of
second-placed Ed Drake, 18, but Drake's attack gave the
defending champion only 0.86 sec over the younger skier who
collected the British junior downhill champion title.
Chemmy Alcott, 22, also skied to her ranking as
favourite to win the British women's downhill
championship.
